Why We Exist

Because communities already hold much of the answer. They need the space, support and partnerships to act on it.

Every Community Deserves the Opportunity to Thrive

Communities know their challenges. They understand their needs, recognise their strengths, and hold ideas about the future they want to build. Yet, too often, they lack the spaces, resources, opportunities, and support needed to turn those ideas into lasting change.

Community Development Centre (CDC) exists to help bridge that gap.

Aid that arrives from outside, with agendas set elsewhere, can meet immediate needs yet leave little behind. We exist because lasting change cannot be imposed. It grows when communities decide their own priorities, hold their own resources, lead their own institutions and keep working together long after a project ends.

We exist to bring people, ideas, resources, and opportunities closer to communities, because lasting change begins when people have the space and support to lead it.

That is why we work in the community, by the community, for the community.

A Centre for Communities

We believe every community deserves a place to gather, connect, learn, exchange ideas, organise, and take collective action.

CDC serves as a bridge between communities and the opportunities that can help them thrive. We work to create spaces where local voices are heard, relationships are strengthened, knowledge is shared, and community-led solutions can grow.

Whether bringing people together to resolve conflict, supporting young people to develop skills, connecting farmers to opportunities, or amplifying community voices through local media and technology, we believe development works best when it starts with people and responds to their realities.

What Drives Our Existence

  • Building Peace and Bridging Divides

Conflict disrupts lives, weakens relationships, and limits opportunities for development. We exist to help communities address differences, rebuild trust, strengthen social cohesion, and promote peaceful coexistence. Through dialogue, community engagement, innovative communication, and locally driven peacebuilding, we support people to become active participants in building and sustaining peace.

  • Transforming Livelihoods and Strengthening Food Security

Communities need more than short-term assistance to thrive. They need sustainable ways to earn a living, feed their families, and build economic security. We work alongside communities to promote sustainable agriculture, improve farming practices, strengthen food security, and expand livelihood and economic opportunities that enable people to become more self-reliant.

  • Empowering Young People and Unlocking Potential

Young people have the creativity, energy, and ideas to shape their communities, but many face barriers to education, skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. We exist to help bridge these gaps by supporting young people to build practical skills, access opportunities, develop enterprises, and participate meaningfully in community development.

  • Strengthening Community Resilience and Self-Reliance

Communities affected by conflict, displacement, poverty, and other challenges deserve opportunities to recover, adapt, and move forward with dignity. We support locally led approaches that strengthen community capacities, encourage collective action, and help people prepare for and respond to challenges while building more secure and resilient futures.

  • Amplifying Voices and Connecting Communities

Meaningful change requires people to be informed, heard, and connected. We use community-centred media, digital technologies, storytelling, and other innovative approaches to share information, amplify local perspectives, address harmful misinformation, and create opportunities for dialogue and participation.

In Short, Here Is What We Exist to Do

To improve the quality of life of vulnerable and marginalised communities through integrated, community-led programmes that promote peace, food security, education, health, economic empowerment, cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and resilient livelihoods.

How We Believe Change Happens

We do not believe lasting development can be delivered to communities from the outside. It grows through trust, participation, local leadership, collaboration, and shared responsibility.

We listen before acting, build on local knowledge, encourage community ownership, and connect people with the skills, partnerships, and resources they need to move forward.

Our role is not to replace community initiative, but to strengthen it. Not to speak over people, but to help amplify their voices. Not simply to implement projects, but to contribute to change that communities can continue long after individual projects end.

Who We Work Alongside

Our work is rooted in the realities and aspirations of communities across South Sudan and Uganda. We place particular emphasis on refugees, returnees, internally displaced people, and host communities, while engaging other community groups and stakeholders according to local needs and priorities.

We focus on women, youth and children, and make sure persons with disabilities and older people are included. We also strengthen the local structures communities rely on: community groups, traditional leaders, smallholder farmers and grassroots enterprises.

We recognise that every community has its own experiences, strengths, and aspirations. Our approach begins with listening, understanding local realities, and working together to identify practical solutions that communities can own and sustain.

The Future We Are Working Towards

We envision peaceful, inclusive, and self-reliant communities where people live with dignity, resolve differences constructively, enjoy secure livelihoods, have access to adequate food, and can shape their own futures.

We want communities where young people can turn their potential into opportunity, farmers can build productive and sustainable livelihoods, displaced and host populations can thrive together, and local ideas can become practical solutions to shared challenges.

This is why CDC exists: to help create the spaces, connections, and opportunities through which communities can build that future together.

Our Commitment

We do not just walk into communities to deliver a project; we are rooted in the communities we serve. Our commitment is to remain there, building local capacity, fostering self-reliance, and safeguarding human rights long after the funding cycle is complete.

Be Part of the Change

Building stronger communities takes collective effort. We welcome individuals, community groups, civil society organisations, institutions, and partners who share our commitment to peace, resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and community-led development.

Together, we can turn local ideas into lasting change.
